Things like php2shell get me thinking (and others preaching) about static site generators.
Here’s my situation: I have a managed server and I can roll out a new WordPress site in literally 3 minutes, 1 minute of which is logging in. I can then customise the site without writing a single line of code or config or whatever. Just assembling and dragging blocks, and changing some numbers, picking colours and fonts, all right there in the browser. That might take me a few hours because I’m fussy and have a “look” in mind.
Does there exist a static site generator that meets the following criteria:
* Doesn’t treat me like a programmer or sysadmin.
* Is flexible without being complicated.
* Isn’t beholden to Markdown.
I’ve looked at a few in the past year or so and most fail on that first point very quickly. Honestly most feel like more work (at first) than just grabbing Bootstrap and coding by hand.
My most recent thought was that old stalwart RapidWeaver, but a quick trial revealed it to be significant work to start from scratch and otherwise reliant on a limited number of templates, none of which were close to what I wanted. It just wasn’t intuitive.
I guess I am quite familiar with WordPress, although it has evolved a lot over the last 10 years. Much of that evolution has been making it easier to use. Quite successfully. Most times I think “I wonder if I can…” I find the answer quickly.
Note that I *am* a sysadmin and programmer, but I don’t want to be a *web* sysadmin and programmer.
