mid 18th century (in English dialect use, in the sense ‘laziness, regarded humorously as a medical condition’): the current use dates from the 1940s and was popularized by the British radio series The Goon Show.

dictionary.cambridge.org/dicti

lurgy - noun [S] UK humorous
uk /ˈlɜː.ɡi/ us /ˈlɝː.ɡi/

an illness or disease, especially one that is not serious

- He's got the dreaded lurgy.

Do/Have you used a CD/DVD/Bluray in a while?

What about burning a disk?

I'm surveying modern day awareness/usage of optical media, mostly to confirm some demographic theories, so if you know what a CD/DVD is, please help me (and maybe others) out by answering some ~10 questions here:

optical-media-survey.benjojo.c

And then please boost for better visibility! Thank you!

@cadey But creating source code that looks like the solution to problem X (which LLMs are pretty good at doing!) is not creating source that solves problem X.

I do think they're capable at interpolating SO answers into a solution, but normally I have to do a lot of stuff which I cannot do by interpolating from SO answers.

@cadey Yeah, the text was pretty accurate. I don't know, we haven't solved CRUDs in... how many years of writing CRUD apps? I have not seen LLMs automating CRUD.

My metaphor is that LLMs are good at "creating stuff that *looks* like X". So I'm concerned about, say, creating illustrations, which is really "creating a picture that looks like X".

@monroe Mucho mejor ahora.

@cadey (And to be clear, the "ugh" was directed at me, for failing to realize there was a video!)

@cadey oh, then my answer might apply, but I'll watch it anyway

@cadey Ugh, I just realized I have to watch the video before replying. I'll see if I have some time later.

@cadey For people in earlier stages- say people who are 18 today and about to choose a University degree... I am not so certain. I have some perspective about the last 40 years of coding, and I still think in 40 years we have not made great strides in automating complex programming, but it's harder to tell.

@cadey I don't know, personally I feel quite safe. I have been doing my job for about 20 years, and I have about 20 years until retirement. I have not seen enough advances in 20 years to make me feel another 20 years will make me obsolete.

Faces in Python 🧐

>>> O_o = 0_0
>>> o_o = 0o0
>>> o_O = 0,0
>>> O,O = o_O

What's this? 😳😮

>>> O_o, o_o, O,O, *o_O

@yo @llamasoft_ox now I'm realizing a flamethrower is a "lanzallamas" in Spanish

@llamasoft_ox besides "call", "llama" in Spanish means "flame". So when talking about fires, news will say things like "the building was engulfed by llamas" or talk about 3-meter llamas.

They're talking about terrible things, but I always think about those giant llamas.

@llamasoft_ox @gilesgoat Yep, I'm team no-onion (and the egg should be lightly cooked/nearly runny). But I think Spanish omelette is the exemplary Spanish dish. It's the cheapest, simplest, and most plentiful materials available (egg, potato, olive oil), yet it's delicious. Unbeatable VFM in a traditionally poor country.

(Unfortunately, if you don't have access to a cooking grandmother, you can't really get the full experience, but bar omelettes can be pretty good.)

@llamasoft_ox @gilesgoat And it's greasy/oily/heavy, but tapas of course. The main staple is "patatas bravas", then everyone has their personal favorites (mine are "bacallà esqueixat" [raw salted cod], "pimientos del Padrón" [Russian roulette peppers], "chocos" [some shellfish], "pinchos" [skewered meat]...)

@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox Well, he already had the Spanish omelette (with fried potatoes inside, right?), which is the essential dish.

Depends on the region, but good ham (and cured meats in general); pretty similar to Italy in that regard (I discovered and loved coppa recently). Unless you're not into meat, of course. As he's in Catalonia, I'd recommend foet/fuet, also. On "pa amb tomàquet" (tomato rubbed in bread).
