This is probably not going to make me popular, but I'm a bit uncomfortable with those lists of weird assholes in tech*.
When I was young, I got put on a list by a local neo-fascist party. Now, this was quite a bit more intimidating because the people who made that list managed to get the street addresses of everyone they put on it which they published (ostensibly so "patriots would know who and where to avoid", but we all know which end of the bull that came out of).
I don't think it's *the same*, per se, for a couple of reasons. If there's no physical contact details, there isn't the same direct threat of violence. I also think people like eg. DHH and Mencius Moldbug have done a lot of things that are *far* more deserving of being shamed and warned about than a bunch of leftie politicians, journalists and left youth activists back in the 90s.
But it still makes me feel uncomfortable. Perhaps just because of my own experiences, it feels iffy in a "this is the sort of stuff Nazis do" way. The lists of fashtech *projects* or *products* don't provoke the same feeling in me at all**.
I still think it's important that there is a way to keep tabs on the fascist tech ecosystem, for the same way that I'm very happy that there are people who keep tabs on the fascist black metal scene: I want to avoid both, and I can only do that if I know what to avoid.
I don't quite know how to properly thread that needle.
*) I was about to say "far-right assholes in tech", but RMS isn't far right by any measure that makes sense to me. You can be a weird toxic asshole even if you're politically left-leaning!
**) I am explicitly not saying "therefore, this should not exist". Things that make me feel uncomfortable do get to exist! But I also get to be uncomfortable about them.
