@don The thing is, we’re already paying for not having it. Developing software like this doesn’t cost more, it just doesn’t work so well for proprietary software distribution models. The amount of F/OSS developer effort put into producing poor clones of Microsoft products is more than the effort required to build something that’s a joy to use.

ISTR that the original Mac developers guide said that there should be an "undo" available for every action... when did that disappear?

Yup, this was one of Raskin’s core views. Don’t ask for confirmation, always make it easy to revert an action. Occasionally it’s impossible (things that touch physical systems or interact with remote services with no undo) but for everything else it’s key.
I believe that’s still in the Mac HIGs. iOS is terrible.
