@phl email is only used for "signalling", for exchanging initial offers. Otherwise the setup uses a simple STUN/TURN server and webrtc in webviews on the clients. It's all pretty standard technology even if it's tricky to get it to reliably work across operating systems, platforms and devices. WhatsApp and Signal aren't doing it much differently. We'll write more about it when we release it as a stable option (probably still some time off).
