As for the unlikely source of this, I heard it in a jazz improv class I was taking with David Bloom earlier this year. Someone was complaining about the diminished scale or some shit and he bluntly said that. Meaning: "If you haven't put any effort into mastering it, you don't get to hate it."
Kid: "I hate the quadratic formula."
Me: "Well, how much time have you spent on it?"
Kid: <blank stare>
Me: "You're not good enough at it to hate it."
